DARNELL BURTON

Athlete – Basketball

Basketball phenom Darnell Burton was born in Lexington, KY, on December 3, 1974, and grew up in the proud area of the West Side of town known as Charlotte Court. His family includes his mother, Delois Burton, father, John L. Dawson, three sisters, Benita Burton, Delrece Burton, and Joy Burton, one brother, Bennie Burton, and a son, lsaac Anderson.

A natural athlete, Darnell excelled at basketball, baseball, and football at a very young age. In middle school, he blossomed into an elite-level basketball player, focusing on the sport for the remainder of his career. His Winburn Warriors 7th grade team went undefeated, and his 8th- and 9th-grade teams won back-to-back city championships during his three years at the local sports powerhouse.

While Darnell was known at a very young age to be relentless on both sides of the court, his career at Paul Laurence Dunbar High School from 1990-1993 was the stuff of legends. As a three-year starter, Darnell led the Bulldogs to the KHSAA Sweet 16 State Championship Game in 1993. Despite a valiant effort, his Bulldogs fell 85-77 to Marion County in 1993. Darnell averaged more than 23 points per game during his high school career and remains one of Lexington’s top 10 all-time scoring leaders with 2,187 points.

Darnell’s high school success led to numerous roundball accolades, including multiple All-City and All-Region honors and titles. He was named Second Team All-State in 1991, followed by First Team All-State honors in both 1992 and 1993, making Darnell one of the few athletes to earn All-State honors three consecutive years. He also participated in the Nike All-American Academic Camp in 1992 and was in the running for Mr. Kentucky Basketball in 1993.

Darnell’s storybook high school career was followed with a successful four years of college basketball at the University of Cincinnati. During his freshman year for the Bearcats, Darnell averaged 9 points and 3 rebounds. As a sophomore, he averaged 12 points and 3 rebounds, followed by junior year averages of 14 points and 3 rebounds. During his senior year, Darnell again averaged 14 points and 3 rebounds. Once again relentless on both sides of the court, he is a member of Cincinnati’s 1,000 Point Club, remains third on the all-time steals list, and still owns one of the highest 3-point shooting percentages in Bearcat history. In 1996, Darnell was named Conference-USA’s Sixth Man of the Year, and in 1997, the sharpshooter was runner-up in the NCAA’s three-point shooting contest.

Darnell gives credit for his success as an athlete to the following coaches: 1959 Dunbar LAASHOF Team Hall of Famer Ulysses Berry (2022), Don Southworth, LAASHOF Hall of Famer K.T. Smith (2024), Champ Ligon, Frank Watson, and University of Cincinnati Basketball Coach Bob Huggins. He was recently named one of Lexington’s Top 25 basketball players of all time by WLEX-Channel 18.

Above all, Darnell firmly adheres to the belief that “the Lord will bless you tremendously day by day and night by night.”
