Angela Green Hampton, a native of Lexington, Ky., is the daughter of the late Patrick and Betty Green and the widow of the late William “Billy” Hampton. She is the sixth of seven children (five girls and two boys), and has four stepchildren, and seven step-grandchildren. Angie was a standout track and field athlete at Beaumont Jr. High and at Lafayette High School, from which she graduated in 1978. She went on to graduate from the University of Kentucky in 1987 with a Bachelor of Arts in Physical Education.

Angie began her career at LFUCG Parks and Recreation in 1991 as a center director at the Dunbar Community Center. Her responsibilities included organizing athletic activities, sports leagues, fitness classes, and supervising various special recreational programs. She retired in 2013 as a recreation manager, where she was responsible for overseeing six community centers and various other programs.

Her vast knowledge of sports in general enabled Angie to run basketball leagues and a track program, in which she also has served as a coach. She has taught karate, sports activities, and served as a regional and state high school track official from 1981-2000. In 1996, Angie founded the Dunbar Blazin’ Bearcats AAU Track Club which exposed youth aged 5–18 to the sport of track and field, serving as the club coordinator and coach from 1997–2011. From 1995 to 2000, Angie coached a 12 & under basketball team (The Homeboys), and in 1997 won the city championship. She and her team were recognized by then-Mayor Pam Miller at a council meeting.

Angie’s heart for service has led to numerous awards and special recognitions, including the 2002 AAU Community Sports and Recreation Person of the Year and the 2003 AAU Most Outstanding Association Volunteer. The award of which she is most proud is the 2006 Time Out for People Award, which is a distinct honor that pays tribute to those Urban County Government employees who have made significant contributions within the community through volunteer services. Other accomplishments include serving as race director for the Bluegrass 10K Race, held annually on July 4th, from 2000–2010 and serving as the AAU Committee Chair (Track & Field) from 1999–2010.

Since retirement, Angie has taken on many roles and currently serves as the event coordinator for Community and Resident Services at the newly renovated gymnasium located at the Black and Williams Center. She also serves as one of the assistant track coaches at Frederick Douglass High School. Additionally, Angie serves as the captain of the Scholarship Team with the Lexington African-American Sports Hall of Fame. She is a member of the LFUCG Parks Advisory Board, and the Black and Williams Center Board.

Angie attends Consolidated Baptist Church and, as a member (in 2009), served as the Assistant Wellness and Recreation Director at the Andrew Center. She helped organize and served as coach for the Upward Basketball Youth Sports Ministry, ran a men’s basketball league, and a Co-Recreational Volleyball League. She also helped organize health fairs and set up fitness classes. Over the years, Angie has made it her life goal to expand services and programs in the community for people of all ages.
