Athlete – Basketball
Reverend Michael F. Scearce Sr. is a native of Lexington, KY. He played high school basketball at Henry Clay High School, where he received several honors. Rev. Scearce was recruited by several universities while playing at Henry Clay High School. Nicknamed “Scooby Doo,” he accepted a full collegiate scholarship to Purdue University where he obtained his bachelor’s degree.
While attending Purdue University, Rev. Scearce received an incentive award in recognition of outstanding scholastic achievement from Purdue’s Caucus of Black Faculty and Staff. He lettered all four years in basketball while attending Purdue from 1978 to 1982 and also played in the NCAA Final Four tournament in 1980 with the Purdue Boilermakers. Additionally, he played in three NIT Final Four tournaments and was selected as one of the outstanding players for the tournament.
Rev. Scearce was drafted by the NBA Indiana Pacers in 1982. After his collegiate career, he traveled abroad and played professionally for Galatasaray Basketball Club in the Turkish Basketball League from 1983 to 1989. Rev. Scearce and his teammates won two Turkish League titles for Galatasaray. He and the team went on to play in the European Cup Games. Additionally, Rev. Scearce traveled throughout Europe participating in the European Cup Games with Galatasaray.
Rev. Scearce is married to Gina L. Scearce, and they have two sons, Michael Scearce Jr. and James Scearce. He accepted his calling into ministry on Sunday August 23rd, 2015 at Bethel Baptist Church under the pastoral leadership of Pastor Larry A. Wilson. Rev. Scearce is also an ordained minister of the gospel of Jesus Christ and was ordained by Pastor Larry A. Wilson and other ordained ministers of Bethel Baptist Church. God’s unconditional love toward Rev. Scearce over the years has had a profound and lifelong influence on his journey to become a servant and messenger of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
