Athlete – Track and Field
Sherry Ballew Agee attended Bryan Station High School from 1970 to 1973, where she immersed herself in band, gymnastics, and track. Despite initially being unable to try out for the track team in her first year due to her mother’s decision, Sherry spent the year practicing at home and teaching herself to run hurdles in preparation for the following year. In her junior year, she made Bryan Station’s track team and made a remarkable impact, setting a national record in the 50-yard hurdles and becoming the KHSAA State Champion in the same event in 1972, tying the state record. Sherry also secured the state champion title in the 80-yard hurdles, breaking the state record, and earned second place in the long jump.
Recognizing Sherry’s potential, Bryan Station Track Coach Paul Woodall invited renowned Coach Ed Temple from the Tennessee State Tigerbelles to witness her performance at the state meet during her senior year. This led to an invitation to their summer camp and eventually a scholarship to Tennessee State University (TSU), marking the beginning of an impressive journey. Sherry went on to compete in major events such as the U.S. Nationals, Pan-American Trials, and even qualified for the Olympic Trials in 1980. Sherry also represented the U.S. in Guadeloupe. She was sponsored by Nike and achieved a ranking among the top 10 hurdlers in the U.S.
After her tenure at TSU, Sherry completed her education at the University of Kentucky (UK). She continued her running career with the Terre Haute Track Club and Marathon Oil Track Club.
Outside of her athletic pursuits, Sherry married Alfred Agee, a standout track athlete from Valley High School in Louisville, KY. She also dedicated some years to military service and has since established herself as the proud owner of Keepsake Korner, a flourishing flower shop.
