KHSAA Sweet 16 State Tournament Champions
The 1983 Henry Clay Blue Devils Basketball Team won the KHSAA Sweet 16 Tournament in a three-overtime thriller at Rupp Arena. On the road to the championship, the Blue Devils defeated Greenup County 71-52, Louisville Fairdale 86-61, and Louisville Ballard 76-62.
In the championship game, Henry Clay defeated Carlisle County in an all-out defensive duel by a score of 35-33. Henry Clay fans stormed the court as Greg Bates hit a last-second jumper to win the game and the championship. Bates and Steve Miller made the Sweet 16 All-Tournament Team. In a well-rounded team effort, Miller was also named first team All-State, Bates was named Second Team All-State, and Jeff Blandon, Roy Moment, and Robert Warfield were named All-State Honorable Mention.
Members of this special team included Breck Ashford, Greg Bates, Clifton Blackburn, Jeff Blandon, Steve Miller, Roy Moment, Chip Rupp, David Thompson, Matt Walling, Robert Warfield, and Doug Willis. They were coached by Al Prewitt, Bob Tripure, and Greg Holt.
