ERICKA MUNCY

Athlete – Basketball, Track & Field, Cross Country

A standout at Bryan Station High School in basketball, track and field, and cross country, Ericka Muncy McGinnis parlayed her athletic accomplishments into an extraordinarily successful career in accounting, entrepreneurship, and ongoing service to education.

In 1990, the Associated Press voted Ericka the Kentucky High School Female Athlete of the Year, recognizing her all-state honors as a Lady Defender averaging 20 points, 5 rebounds, 4 steals and 4 assists. The all-state honors extended to her performance in track and field, as well as cross country. In her senior year, Ericka was the lone Defender to represent Bryan Station in the state’s track and field meet where she single-handedly powered the school to a fourth-place overall finish by placing first in the 100-meter, 200-meter and 400-meter, as well as finishing fourth in the long jump. In addition to this rare and extraordinary accomplishment, Ericka displayed her versatility as an athlete by placing 14th at the state cross country meet.

Her outstanding performances that year led Gatorade to name Ericka as its Player of the Year, an award that received recognition in Sports Illustrated Magazine. This honor would not be achieved again by a Lexington woman for almost 30 years.

Ericka’s athletic accomplishments and strong commitment to her studies led to her recruitment by the University of Kansas to play basketball and run track.  After suffering injuries early in her college career, she made the decision to concentrate on only one sport – basketball. On the hardwood, she proved to be a vital cog in the success of a top-ten ranked Lady Jayhawks squad as she became known as one of the top defenders in the Big 8 Conference. As a traditional point guard, Muncy McGinnis was the consummate floor general, posting double digit assists on multiple occasions.

Ericka graduated with dual majors in accounting and business administration, and later played for the Athletes in Action tour team. She holds a master’s degree in accounting and an MBA degree from the University of Kentucky. With more than 25 years of experience as a CPA, Muncy McGinnis is currently employed with Duke Energy. In addition, she has brought her unparalleled enthusiasm and work ethic to her position as minister of music at Powerhouse Church of God, which was founded by her mother, Jacqueline White. Her commitment to education has also seen her serve as CFO of the thriving New Life Academy of Excellence in Atlanta.

Ericka’s personal life was enriched by her marriage to the late Aubrey McGinnis, a decorated airline pilot and military veteran. Together, Ericka and Aubrey have a beautiful daughter, Brea McGinnis, who continues to be a testament to their legacies.
